Today Robert and Ashley took time to participate in the Gilbert Primary School Farm and Career Day. This was a neat way to give back to the community where we're based and to show off some of our equipment along with other vehicles (police, ambulance, car hauler, tractor trailer, tractors) and farm animals. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Along with the HLS truck, we had a propane-powered lawn mower, a ride-on fertilizer spreader and a sod roller. </div>

As we prepare to celebrate this Christmas, we wanted to share special wishes and blessings with all of our Heritage Landscape family and friends. We hope you all have a wonderful holiday season that is filled with joy and hope. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
A few pictures of how we've celebrated this holiday....</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nPWGqBt3lGk/VJh10SAUZaI/AAAAAAAAILs/KSdSY9Ipqq0/s1600/family%2Bchristmas2014.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nPWGqBt3lGk/VJh10SAUZaI/AAAAAAAAILs/KSdSY9Ipqq0/s1600/family%2Bchristmas2014.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
While Holly (Robert and Debbie's oldest daughter) was home with her fiance, Greg, the McLeod and Harman crews braved the zoo as an entire family. The "snow" and lights were magical for all ages!</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
This past Thursday, we held the annual Christmas party for our employees. The guys always look forward to a good meal (this year delicious BBQ chicken cooked by our shop manager, Darryl) and everyone goes home with a door prize.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
Over and over we say our company would not be who we are without having a good team. We're thankful for all of the guys who work for us, who make your properties look their best, and serve with positive attitudes. </div>

This past Saturday we woke in Gilbert to unexpectedly find snow falling down like white chicken feathers. It quickly blanketed the area. At our house, Ashley measured snow as deep as 6 inches in some spots. It made for a great day of rolling huge snow balls (like rolls of sod) and doing wintery things. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
All the beauty wasn't without problems, however. Many people lost power (including us and Robert and Debbie) and trees fell and lost huge branches weighted down with leaves that had not fallen (because, really, it's still fall!).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Tj1qsze4Zok/VFpyIMLPKPI/AAAAAAAAIH0/FuExdHjlwPw/s1600/snowranger.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Tj1qsze4Zok/VFpyIMLPKPI/AAAAAAAAIH0/FuExdHjlwPw/s1600/snowranger.jpg" height="180" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-eLcOz5UnRFQ/VFpyF_SaHKI/AAAAAAAAIHk/lZO15mT32R8/s1600/snowtruck.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-eLcOz5UnRFQ/VFpyF_SaHKI/AAAAAAAAIHk/lZO15mT32R8/s1600/snowtruck.jpg" height="320" width="180" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-vN3HT6khinQ/VFpyGnUpqbI/AAAAAAAAIHs/MaQUERecFj4/s1600/snowyard.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-vN3HT6khinQ/VFpyGnUpqbI/AAAAAAAAIHs/MaQUERecFj4/s1600/snowyard.jpg" height="180" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This surprise snow event is a good reminder for all of us to be prepared for the next snow storm. Please contact Heritage to discuss how you would like your properties managed during winter weather.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And until then, enjoy fall!</div>

A few weeks ago, the Heritage install team replaced five acres of unhealthy centipede grass with over-seeded perennial rye grass at the Colonial Life campus with Bermuda turf. This took a lot of man power but we're pleased with the results. Here are some pictures to walk you through the job. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The first step was Kevin spraying out the existing grass. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2B-nJ2W_p9A/U8R_oalDJhI/AAAAAAAAIEw/4_hYt7An5Pg/s1600/grassspray.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2B-nJ2W_p9A/U8R_oalDJhI/AAAAAAAAIEw/4_hYt7An5Pg/s1600/grassspray.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then we power-raked and removed the dead grass. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4vU2TbMcbLM/U8R7M-3FnzI/AAAAAAAAIDk/gssbuknpGPI/s1600/colonialstart1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4vU2TbMcbLM/U8R7M-3FnzI/AAAAAAAAIDk/gssbuknpGPI/s1600/colonialstart1.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Kleck and Ashley brought in some extra helpers for the late afternoon shift one day. Kleck's son Parker and Ashley's boys Levi, Mason and Tyler were on site. While Ashley and Kleck walked over the site and discussed the job with their crew, the boys piled up all of cardboard tubes that held the sod rolls. They had a lot of fun doing this and Kleck rewarded them with a trip to Chick Fil-A for ice cream afterward.</div>

We hope you and your loved ones had a special July 4th, celebrating the freedoms we have as Americans. The Harman and McLeod families gathered for the Peach Festival parade in Gilbert and then lunch and games at Grandma and Da's (Debbie and Robert's). <a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-1qG_v9o2fEc/U72Q8xNntrI/AAAAAAAAICw/IkBO_6W5_rw/s1600/July42014family.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-1qG_v9o2fEc/U72Q8xNntrI/AAAAAAAAICw/IkBO_6W5_rw/s1600/July42014family.JPG" height="249" width="320" /></a></div>

Recently Heritage Landscape Services earned recognition from the SC Smart Business Recycling Program for our efforts recycling more than 76 tons of material during the fiscal 2013 year. This includes our used oil, scrap metal and other materials. That's 76 tons of material that was recycled instead of filling our landfills.</div>

Levi, Ashley and I's oldest son, is finishing up Kindergarten. It's been Career Week at his school this week and he's had the opportunity to draw, write, and dress up like someone who works in his future profession. It probably comes as no surprise that Levi wants to be a landscaper like his daddy (although last year's 4 year-old Career Day choice was a swamp logger). </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
His drawing below depicts a landscape crew that is raking, laying sod and planting a tree. </div>

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Levi's outfit was complete with a plaid shirt (and he insisted on wearing a white shirt underneath to be like Daddy) and a Rain Bird hat. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
We won't pressure Levi to take over Heritage anytime soon but he's making a great landscaper-in-training (should he choose this as his profession). He is always right beside Ashley when work is being done outside, whether that is planting trees, laying sod, or repairing irrigation. It's a blessing to have a business continue on to the second generation (Robert to Ashley)--and we believe our family relationship makes us a stronger company. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We hope your spring is going well. It's our pleasure to serve you and your properties as we help make the area we live in a beautiful place.</div>

Recently Ashley and Kleck were invited to visit the Rain Bird pump manufacturing facility in Tuscon, Arizona. <a href="http://www.rainbird.com/landscape/index.htm" target="_blank">Rain Bird</a> manufactures a full range of landscape and irrigation materials. They are the only company that supplies a complete irrigation system, from the pump to the irrigation heads.<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-it-kt902stc/UYRzbcvfRxI/AAAAAAAAH5w/aMGcdd9KAzw/s1600/IMG_20130425_151316_226.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-it-kt902stc/UYRzbcvfRxI/AAAAAAAAH5w/aMGcdd9KAzw/s320/IMG_20130425_151316_226.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

In addition to touring the Rain Bird facility, Ashley and Kleck enjoyed a Jeep tour of the surrounding desert, sponsored by Rain Bird. </div>

A common groundcover that produces a blanket of purple flowers in the spring, creeping phlox or "thrift" has a special connection to Heritage. As we mentioned in <a href="http://hls2.com/overview.html" target="_blank">our company history</a>, Robert has fond memories of working on his uncle's thrift farm in Clinton, S.C. When going through some family papers recently, Robert came across this newspaper article from the 1960s that describes the family farm as one that, at the time, produced the largest thrift fields in the world. You can click on the image below to read the article. </div>

For Heritage, "being green" has a lot of meanings. We're part of the "green industry" because our work focuses on keeping landscapes green and growing. We hold our "green certification" because we make environmentally responsible decisions. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So it makes sense when there's a holiday where everyone wears green, we would be sure to join in. The McLeod and Harman crew gathered this afternoon for lunch and we snapped this quick picture of Robert, Kleck and Ashley with all the kids in their green. </div>

We hope you enjoyed this great weekend of weather as the Midlands greens up for spring. </div>

We have already noticed while working on the conversions and cranking the units in our shop, there is virtually no odor and the noise level is lower when running a propane-powered lawnmower. The conversions are costly, but will have many benefits in the long run.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/--jijtWmSJdI/US1uZDQSjqI/AAAAAAAAH48/Gavg3sBPjGs/s1600/propane.jpg"><img border="0" height="191" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/--jijtWmSJdI/US1uZDQSjqI/AAAAAAAAH48/Gavg3sBPjGs/s320/propane.jpg" width="320" /></a><br />
<br />
Several of the benefits of using propane to power our equipment include:<br />
<ol>
<li>Reduced Emissions — Propane burns much more efficiently (around 90-95% efficient) than gasoline and produces less carbon monoxide and other greenhouse gases. </li>
<li>Cleanliness — Propane is not spilled like gasoline when refueling. Spilled gasoline can catch on fire when in contact with hot engine parts. </li>
<li>Extended Engine Life — Although it takes more propane than gasoline to power an engine, less energy is wasted in combustion of propane. Engines run on propane run cooler, which means less stress on internal engine parts and extended engine life. </li>
</ol>
These benefits summarize an article found in Mother Earth News. Read the complete article here: <a href="http://www.motherearthnews.com/safety-and-benefits-of-propane-small-engines-over-gasoline.aspx#axzz2M6VDuuV3">http://www.motherearthnews.com/safety-and-benefits-of-propane-small-engines-over-gasoline.aspx#axzz2M6VDuuV3</a><br />
<br />
If you haven't already, you'll soon see our propane-powered mowers on your property. We continue to look <a href="http://heritagelandscape.blogspot.com/2009/12/efforts-to-be-green-at-heritage.html" target="_blank">for ways we can be a "greener" green business</a>. Please share your suggestions.Anna Mhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06975383821182905001noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-793717149897111594.post-18145826088931640842013-02-28T05:10:00.000-08:002013-02-28T05:10:10.968-08:00Track Sod Installer<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="344" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/8yjD_IcJkdc" width="459"></iframe></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Heritage has recently purchased a new Track Sod Installer. It is a rubber-tracked unit with a load capacity of 2,500 lbs. and installs big rolls of sod 24" - 48" wide. It is able to lay sod very fast yet smooth because of the track's help with load displacement. The end result is new turf that looks like it has been established for years.</span>Ian Rhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07455164658605976187noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-793717149897111594.post-2203777550031881322012-12-19T19:18:00.000-08:002012-12-19T19:18:20.824-08:00Merry Christmas from Heritage!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

This week Heritage purchased a used mulch blowing truck. Mulch provides an alternative to pinestraw. Some benefits of using mulch are it stays in place during high winds and it's a natural bi-product of the tree industry. This Finn truck also has the ability to blow topsoil to washed out areas. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
A dedicated crew is trained to operate this equipment. In the picture below, our guys are applying a fresh layer of mulch to this bed. </div>

Each fall, Heritage offers a <a href="http://heritagelandscape.blogspot.com/2010/09/successful-dove-hunt.html" target="_blank">dove hunt</a> on Robert's family's farm in McBee, SC, on the Saturday after Labor Day. While we (Ashley and Anna and the boys) were in McBee today, we checked out the field that has been prepped for the dove hunt. Corn and millet are growing well!</div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Meet Waylon and Ziggy, Ashley and Anna's new Dwarf Nigerian Goats. They had fun the other evening checking out one of the Heritage trucks while Ashley mowed the grass. They will eventually be used to help keep the brush "mowed" down around the house. Case in point, here are most of Robert's grandkids in the bucket of Kleck's front-end loader. What fun!</div><div style="text-align: center;">Left to right: Weston, Mallory, Ryan, Levi, and a neighbor, Kennedy. </div><br />

When these first flowers appear, we know that spring won't be too far away. This year the first day of spring is March 20.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">In many areas, crocuses pop through the snow. We've been lucky this year to avoid the wintery weather--but still appreciate seeing those yellow, purple and white blooms. These crocuses are at our house (Ashley and Anna). Levi likes to call the striped ones "zebra crocuses." Crocus is a genus in the Iris family.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lQRXl1Z9Jk8/T00uCLOsnKI/AAAAAAAAGPw/xDYvwh7J75w/s1600/feb2012+007.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lQRXl1Z9Jk8/T00uCLOsnKI/AAAAAAAAGPw/xDYvwh7J75w/s320/feb2012+007.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Another favorite spring bloom is the daffodil. It is one of the most hardy bulbs--even the most inexperienced gardener should have no trouble growing a group of these. Squirrels and other pests leave the bulbs alone and according to the <a href="http://www.daffodilusa.org/daffodils/faq.html">American Daffodil Society</a>, daffodil bulbs should outlive the gardeners who planted them. Although this flower is sometimes called a "jonquil" in the South, that term really only applies to a certain species of daffodil. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Q85GzB1OzFA/T00uDF0H_tI/AAAAAAAAGP4/th_O2vtKSQ0/s1600/feb2012+018.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Q85GzB1OzFA/T00uDF0H_tI/AAAAAAAAGP4/th_O2vtKSQ0/s320/feb2012+018.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Also blooming this time of year is the native Carolina Jasmine. Our state flower, the Carolina Jasmine is a trailing/climbing vine that is recognized by its yellow blooms. Ashley and Anna have several of these vines growing on their property. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-H98zRDy7BEw/T00uEAjiYWI/AAAAAAAAGQA/-Zjf3lOMsR4/s1600/feb2012+026.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-H98zRDy7BEw/T00uEAjiYWI/AAAAAAAAGQA/-Zjf3lOMsR4/s320/feb2012+026.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">We hope the blooms around town and in your own yards lift your spirits as we wrap up this winter!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><a href="http://ih.constantcontact.com/fs003/1108504812161/img/41.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://ih.constantcontact.com/fs003/1108504812161/img/41.jpg" width="200" /></a></span></div><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"> </span><br />
<ul><li><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><b>Pampas grass</b> is great for making a statement in a larger space but does have sharp blades of grass that can cut.</span></li>
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">
<li><b>Muhly grass</b> is a smaller option that has soft leaves. Sweet grass baskets sold to Charleston tourists are made from this grass. When in bloom at the end of the summer, the pink plumes resemble floating cotton candy.</li>
<li>Other great choices are all in the Miscanthus family of grasses such as ‘Adagio’, ‘Gracillimus’, ‘Yaku Jima’, and ‘Morning Light’.</li>
<li>Choices for dwarf grasses include ‘Little Kitten’, ‘Hameln’, and ‘Mouldry’.</li>
</span></ul><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">There are many more choices - you can’t beat the low maintenance and drought tolerance of these ornamental grasses.</span></blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9iVlhUcGCu4/TylSPjbg49I/AAAAAAAAA4k/IVMPUWGc9yE/s1600/roses.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9iVlhUcGCu4/TylSPjbg49I/AAAAAAAAA4k/IVMPUWGc9yE/s1600/roses.png" style="cursor: move;" /></a><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br />
<b><u>Roses</u></b> </span> <span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">February</span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"> is a perfect time for planting roses! This prickly bush can </span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">prevent trespassers and provide fruit for making quince jelly!</span></blockquote><br />

He was a healthy 11 lbs 7 oz. Carey had a great delivery and they're all home now, adjusting to life as a family of six. Parker will have plenty of playmates with his with big brothers Weston and Ryan and big sister Mallory. Once all the Harman and McLeod kids have their driver licenses we can have a new Heritage crew taking care of our customers!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

Which explains why it seemed suitable to discuss figs in this September yard post. <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_fig"></a><br />
<br />
The fig tree makes a lovely addition to your yard. They prefer to be planted near a building that offers some protection. Once established, the tree can grow to be quite large (as seen in this picture below of the fig tree at Robert and Debbie's). <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-3_tHj2LfZ7A/Tnp5nRlro4I/AAAAAAAAFc0/jVvbcI7ES80/s1600/july2011+010.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-3_tHj2LfZ7A/Tnp5nRlro4I/AAAAAAAAFc0/jVvbcI7ES80/s320/july2011+010.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>These figs are ripe when they turn a brownish-purple color and are somewhat soft to touch. They should detach from the tree easily if they are ripe. You won't see many fresh figs in large grocery stores because they're a very fragile fruit. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2DLLpDSC3Fc/Tnp5oSBKY-I/AAAAAAAAFc4/C5plJARoCto/s1600/july2011+011.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2DLLpDSC3Fc/Tnp5oSBKY-I/AAAAAAAAFc4/C5plJARoCto/s320/july2011+011.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
Ah...but if you have the chance to try a fresh fig, certainly do! Their sweet taste pairs well with cheese. Or just bite in and enjoy it plain. Figs were one of the first plants to be cultivated by humans.
